Sixth graders at Lyman Moore Middle School recently wrapped up a Side x Side bookmaking and physical theater program led by teaching artists Anne Ackerman and Gretchen Berg. Integrated with a science unit on climate change, students worked with Ackerman to create alternative book forms to capture their research on Earth’s vanishing ice and visualize ice melt data trends through graphing, mixed media art, and writing. The program began with students painting paper to represent ice melt, ice, and changes in global temperatures. Students then folded, cut, and partially assembled their book structures, adding more detailed designs with acrylic paint pens. They then worked with Gretchen Berg on a physical theater performance to capture their learning on climate change.
