Fourth graders at Connors Elementary School in Lewiston participated in a Side x Side program that integrated a history and literacy unit with bookmaking. During the program, students explored history, timelines, and the concept of primary sources to better understand how we tell stories over time. Students then created their own primary source by writing about a significant personal experience. Led by teaching artist Jill Osgood, students began by drawing and painting self portraits. They then used watercolor and wax resist to create covers for their books. Finally, choosing one sentence from their personal narratives, they used collage and mixed idea to illustrate their experiences and produce books that serve as primary resources in their own history.
