Lyseth’s art teacher, Ellen Handelman, collaborated with teaching artist Leah Cross on a Side x Side program for fourth graders that integrated school values and a Wabanaki studies unit with mosaic tile and design to create a permanent mural. The program kicked off with a presentation on public mural design including the world’s longest title mural in Vietnam! After sketching and refining designs, students selected the images of tree and river to represent values of inclusion, community, nature, and reciprocity. They began creating the mural by sketching lightly in pencil and then using glass, stone, and ceramic mosaic tiles, to fill in their tree and river images. Students also created personalized gems with small drawings and words that are hidden throughout the mosaic. Classrooms in other grades also contributed by filling in mosaic tiles, creating a lasting community art piece.
