Side x Side creates vital opportunities to increase collaboration through our community partners. We strive to connect local and regional artists, experts and schools, and facilitates learning communities between student interns and classroom teachers. In practice, teachers, teaching artists, and visiting experts collaborate with Side x Side staff members to address academic and artistic questions and challenges.
Building on these ideas, they plan arts-integrated curricula that draw connections between arts and non-arts subject matter as the work progresses. With Side x Side staff support, the teacher, artist, and expert work together with the students, co-teaching throughout their partnership.
The University of Southern Maine
In the spring of 2013, Side x Side partnered with Kelly Hrenko from the University of Southern Maine’s art education department to bring USM’s student interns into our participating school’s classrooms. Since USM regularly orchestrates public-partnership collaborations, they were especially thrilled to partner in our Artonics collaboration where 37 Casco Bay High School students were invited to USM’s CI2 lab and to Oak Street Studios, to create unique interactive sculptures with art education and computer science students.
