First graders at Connors Elementary School in Lewiston participated in a Side x Side printmaking program led by teaching artist Sarah Boyden and integrated with a literacy unit on social emotional learning. Using the book, Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak for inspiration, students learned to draw faces showing different emotions to match descriptive feeling words. Using a mood meter, students then picked one descriptive feeling word from each quadrant and used ball point pens to etch their designs on to styrofoam to create four prints in primary colors. Finally, each student’s prints were mounted on card stock to become one cohesive art piece.
