Third graders at Talbot elementary school participated in a Side x Side program that integrated a science unit on Maine’s estuary ecosystems with art. Led by teaching artist Posey (a.k.a. Pamela Moulton), students created masks of organisms from the estuary they chose to focus on. They then wove 6-foot-high eelgrass blades out of recycled materials, attaching each blade to a bamboo pole. Students also learned how to make pom poms out of recycled plastic spools sourced from a local rope factory to attach to their eelgrass blades. The masks and eelgrass blade fiber sculptures were then used to create a performance depicting the meadow ecosystem which was performed during a field trip to Mackworth Island State Park.
