This fall, third graders at Rowe Elementary School participated in a Side x Side illustration and watercolor program led by teaching artist Cat LaBarre and integrated with a unit on social emotional learning. Through ongoing community conversations in their classrooms, students explored various strategies they use to help regulate their emotions while recording their thoughts and ideas in project journals. They then used artwork from their journals to create a personal set of social and emotional strategy flashcards. The artwork was accompanied by writing of practical strategies that students can refer back to and use as part of their own growth and development throughout the school year.
