First and second graders at Rowe Elementary School participated in a Side x Side program integrated with a year-long Healthy me, Healthy ME (Maine) study. During the program, students investigated and answered questions about state agriculture and the ways to stay healthy in Maine. Students learned about the benefits to Maine citizens from agriculture, ideas about the local movement and how to find local food sources, the benefits to individuals as well as the state as a whole from buying and eating locally, and how to buy and prepare food from local sources. In collaboration with Side x Side and led by teaching artist, Sarah Boyden, students drew on their research to make multimedia tiles, using drawing, painting, marbleizing, collaging, and writing. The completed tiles will be framed and hung outside the cafeteria. Students also designed seed packets for the local fruits and vegetables they studied.
