We recently wrapped up our seventh annual Side x Side Summer Arts Institute and loved collaborating and making art for two days with our amazing classroom teachers and specialists! This year’s professional development event for educators featured art-making workshops, training, and planning in Portland (at Ocean Avenue Elementary School) and Lewiston (at Connors Elementary School), as well as online via Zoom. Guests participated in one of six workshops led by Side x Side teaching artists: Alternative Book Forms, Digital Storytelling, Motif, Papier-Mache, Parkour Printmaking, or Pocket Puppets. A special highlight was a dance/movement workshop for all participants led by visiting artist and arts integration expert Margot Greenlee of BodyWise Dance in Washington D.C. Throughout the two days, institute participants learned tips and tricks to engage their students and help them connect to the curriculum in new ways using the arts.
