During Friday’s event, speakers included: Senator Angus King; Beth Wilbur Van Mierlo, Executive Director of Side x Side; Sarah Lawrence, Field Representative for Congresswoman Chellie Pingree; Kathy Bertini, Interdisciplinary Instruction Team Coordinator at the Maine Department of Education; Dr. Jaqueline Edmondson, President of University of Southern Maine (USM); Dr. Adam Tuchinsky, Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at USM; Dr. Kelly Hrenko, Professor of Art Education at USM; and Mia Bogyo, Education Programs Manager at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA).
Congressionally-Directed Spending (CDS) is included in annual federal appropriations legislation and provides a specific amount of discretionary funding to a state, locality, or nonprofit organization for projects with demonstrated civic and community value. Side x Side was one of 140 Maine projects receiving a total of $250,083,018 this year.
