Students will learn about composition in art, specifically how various rules of composition are used in filmmaking.

Students will learn about the five shots used in filmmaking, along with camera operation and safety.

Students will learn about the roles and responsibilities of filmmakers, and understand the fundamental steps in creating a film.

Students will learn how to translate their research into a storyboard and then how that translates to a film.

Using their storyboards as a guide/reference, students will work as a team to learn how to film the parts of their storyboards.

Students will participate in a celebration of their work and share their films with teachers and peers.

Students will create individual zines. Zines are an art form that allow students to combine self-selected art media with classroom content. Students can fill their zines with facts, information, thoughts, and opinions on the content as well as imagery. Images can be original illustrated images, printed historic images, maps, designs, collaged pieces, or any combination of these that the student chooses. Students can create graphic novel or comic strip style zines with accurate content information.

The content of the films can vary based on grade and unit of study. Consider having students learn about and create Public Service Announcements (PSAs). PSAs connect well to science curriculum. Apply this extension prior to starting Lesson One on composition.

Students will practice collecting and saving quality images, creating a slide show of images, rather than a moving film. Use this extension in place of lessons five and six.
