Awakening Tomorrow's Innovators through Art
Students will study the ocean environment and learn about a specific sea creature living near the East Coast. Through scientific writing, illustration, and sculpture, students will research a sea creature of their choosing and then share what they know with peers through a celebration of learning.
Drawing and sculpting can help us better understand science concepts.
Students will understand:
The unit will begin with a visit from an ocean expert or marine scientist. Students will watch a presentation about ocean habitats and learn interesting facts about sea creatures. Next, students will explore a variety of books and images of sea creatures to help them determine which creature they will choose for their research project.
Teaching Tip: Collect resource materials for possible sea creature options before beginning Lesson 1.
Students will learn about specific sea creatures and then create research cards about each creature.
Students will look closely at sea creatures and create scientifically accurate illustrations that include all of their body parts.
Students will turn their research and drawings on sea creatures into a three-dimensional model.
Students will use paint to make their sea creature sculptures come to life!
Students will teach their classmates about their sea creature using their research and sculpture as a visual aid.
