Awakening Tomorrow's Innovators through Art
Students will learn about the importance of mapmaking through history. They will explore concepts of space, scale, perspective, and symbology while researching their neighborhoods in order to create both a personalized and collaborative classroom map.
We can visually represent the many complex meanings of “place” around us.
Students will understand:
Students will participate in a walking field trip around their school and community. They will travel with sketch clipboards to draw or list what they notice. Upon returning to school, students will engage in a discussion about where different places are located in their community. The teacher will explain and introduce the project, ask students to define a map, and show examples of maps.
Students will be introduced to map making and the program.
Students will diagram a historical place in Portland.
Students will illustrate a section of a map on a larger grid.
Students will paint the map using watercolor.
Students will assemble the parts of their collaborative map of Portland.
Students will participate in a celebration of their work and share their maps with teachers and peers.
