Awakening Tomorrow's Innovators through Art
Students will gain a deeper understanding of history through the process of turning historical research into a mural. Students will learn how to use a project journal to collect entries based on classroom research and drawings based on the curriculum and field trips. Students will then create a mural that combines their written research and drawings.
*This unit pairs well with Physical Theater
We can visually represent the many complex meanings of “place” around us.
Students will understand:
Show a short slideshow defining murals and outlining a brief history: the Chauvet Cave, Egyptian tombs, and Rufus Porter as an example of a mural artist. Focus on the idea of murals being a long-standing part of world history and on their longevity. Today, you can go and visit murals that were created over 30,000 years ago! Outline the process of the project: 1) researching a topic, 2) taking notes and drawing in a project journal, 3) creating a mural from those materials.
Using their project journals, students practice different drawing strategies.
Students learn how to use their project journal as a tool for recording and interpreting research.
Students will create the components of the mural using their project journal notes and drawings.
Students will participate in a celebration of their work and share their work with teachers and peers.
